Reflexology

Encouraging multidimensional aspects of wellness

Welcome to Hayley Nicholson Reflexology

Hello and thank you for stopping by. My name is Hayley and I am a reflexology practitioner in Ashtead, Surrey. I am passionate about holistic health and supporting others on their personal journeys to complete wellness.

I am a fully insured and fully qualified reflexologist, holding a nationally recognised and regulated level 3 reflexology diploma. I am also trained in maternity reflexology and Menopause reflexology by Sally Earlam - Maternity Specialist and Head of Training & Education with the Association of Reflexologists (AoR), advanced facial reflexology and Zone Face Lift with Ziggie Bergman, the UK's leading expert in facial reflexology with the London School of Reflexology. I am full member of the Association of Reflexologists which means I am committed to continuing training and personal development every year. I currently offer treatments at my home in Ashtead.

My passion for reflexology started many years ago when I was experiencing unexplained infertility and my mind was blown by the amazing things reflexology can do for our complete wellbeing. Fast forward 6 years, multiple pregnancies and two beautiful babies later, I aim to help clients bring their bodies back into balance while relaxing and enjoying the process!

I have a particular interest in stress, fertility, pregnancy, and menopause as well as supporting palliative care and currently treat one day a week at the Princess Alice Hospice.

Ultimately my aim is to get you feeling healthier and more energised by bringing your body back into balance in an environment where you can experience deep relaxation.

What is Reflexology?

Reflexology is a complimentary, touch therapy based on the theory that points on the feet, lower legs and hands correspond with different areas of the body. As a reflexology practitioner I will use my thumbs and fingers, to apply controlled pressure on the reflex points, working across both feet with the aim of bringing all body systems back into balance, releasing any energy blockages, and easing any symptoms you may be experiencing. There is now strong evidence that supports the theory that stress is a huge risk factor in the development of many significant long term and potentially life-threatening conditions such a cancer, heart disease and stroke. It can also be a big influencing factor when trying to conceive a baby. Regular reflexology is effective in promoting deep relaxation, improving circulation, sleep, digestive issues, muscle & joint pain, pain & inflammation, headaches, hay fever, irregular menstrual cycles, menopause symptoms, anxiety, stress and depression. Above all, by relaxing and reducing stress in our lives, we are optimising good health and resilience in our bodies.

How I Work

Your reflexology treatment will be tailored to you. The first treatment will include a short consultation during which I will gather appropriate information on your health and lifestyle, this will mean I can treat you safely and suitably, targeting specific areas and plan treatments accordingly. It’s important to remember reflexology is holistic – I will treat the whole you, as what we are aiming for is balance. Our body systems work together and rely on each other so overall balance and harmony in the body is vital for helping you reach any treatment goals you may have. I may also suggest some targeted lifestyle advice, potentially physical and non-physical which will work in combination with your treatments for even better results.

Reflexology aims to:

PROMOTE DEEP RELAXATION

BALANCE HORMONES

BOOST CIRCULATION

EASE PREGNANCY SYMPTOMS

SUPPORT THE IMMUNE SYSTEM

INCREASE ENERGY LEVELS

AID SLEEP

REDUCE STRESS AND ANXIETY

ALLEVIATE ALLERGIES

REDUCE ACHES & PAINS

What to Expect

Your first reflexology treatment will include a short consultation during which I will ask information on your current, previous and relevant family medical history (please bring a list of any medications you are currently taking)

All information is stored confidentially and securely by me. You will be asked to sign a consent form and a GDPR form which details how I confidentially store your data.

After removing your shoes, socks, and any jewellery, you’ll gently sit back in my comfy reclining chair, where I will start by preparing your feet for the treatment. I will begin by wiping your feet with warm towels to ensure we remove any bits of fluff or grit and to start to relax the soft tissue in your feet. I will then apply some reflexology medium which is vegan and scent free to help with movement across your feet.

You can then feel free to (and I would encourage) close your eyes and completely switch off. During the treatment I will use my thumbs, fingers and hands to apply pressure and gently work across both feet, working across all body systems and energy chakras. I may also use healing crystals if this is something we have previously discussed and agreed upon. At the end of the treatment, we discuss any findings as well as anything you may have felt during the treatment, I may also offer some relevant lifestyle / aftercare advice. I encourage you to drink at least 2 glasses of water within the hour after your treatment and avoid stimulants. I would also like you to rest as much as possible.

Pregnancy Reflexology

Reflexology in pregnancy aims to optimise your health and wellbeing and may ease any common pregnancy related symptoms. There a various reflexology techniques used during different stages of pregnancy and the fourth trimester, and your treatments will be planned carefully to reflect your own personal journey.

Stress is known to increase maternity complications, so pregnancy reflexology is a wonderful way to focus on you and your baby while reducing stress & anxiety during these deeply relaxing treatments.

What to expect?

Prior to your first treatment we will have short consultation to help me understand how your pregnancy is going, any current non-pregnancy related health conditions, and a general lifestyle overview. I will then plan your treatments around your symptoms and stage of pregnancy.

During the treatment my aim to make you as comfortable as possible working in a safe position according to which trimester you are in and what your symptoms will allow. You then have the opportunity to sit/lie back, relax and have time to connect with your baby.

Some published research has shown that reflexology;

  • Significantly reduced pain in labour (1,3)
  • Reduced the length of the first stage of labour (1,3)
  • Improved quality of sleep in post-natal women (2)
  • Shorter second stage for women with lower back pain or pelvic girdle pain who have had 6 weekly treatments (4)
  • Reduced pain and stress levels for women with lower back pain or pelvic girdle pain who have had 6 weekly treatments (5)
  • Lowers anxiety scores of women in labour (30 minute treatment) (6)

Reflexology For Menopause

Understanding Menopause

Believe it or not it’s only been since the 20th century that breakthroughs in understanding the menopause began, with HRT being developed

in the 1960’s. Now, attitudes to the menopause have drastically changed with celebrity voices, books, podcasts and NICE guidelines, however a recent survey has shown that 95% of women in the UK would try alternative therapies before HRT to try and avoid any health risks associated with medication.

Every woman’s menopause journey will be different but most common symptoms include;

Hot flushes

Night sweats

Mood swings

Insomnia

Irregular periods

Low libido

Anxiety

Poor concentration & memory

Achy joints

Headaches

Bloating

Weight gain

Peri Menopause & Menopause

Peri menopause on average lasts 4 years and generally starts between the ages of 40 and 50. The fluctuating hormones during this time are responsible for the symptoms you may be experiencing such as hot flushes,

night sweats and irregular, light/heavy periods. Menopause begins when there

has been no period for 12 months.

The Research

Reflexology is an excellent complimentary therapy to support women during this time and can help ease symptoms.  There is now research that shows how stress can have profound effect on menopausal symptoms, with chronically elevated levels of cortisol increasing the likelihood of severe menopause symptoms.

Other research studies showing the effectiveness of reflexology for menopause symptoms include;

Your Personal Treatment Plan

During your course of treatments I will use specialised techniques and focused reflex points according to your specific symptoms which will be discussed during your initial consultation. We can delve in to how the changes in hormones contribute towards the symptoms you are experiencing and look in detail at the five pillars of menopause which focuses on lifestyle tweaks that can be made to help support you such as diet, exercise and sleep. Treatments are planned carefully

around you, how you are feeling and what your feet tell me.

Reflexology & HRT

We know reflexology can be an excellent support through menopause but this doesn’t mean it’s not suitable if you are taking HRT. Many of my clients take HRT and the benefits of reflexology work alongside this.

My role as your reflexologist

I am here to listen, to plan your treatments according YOUR personal and unique journey, to offer guidance and support and to feel what your feet are telling me. Ultimately, I want to empower you to be your best self during menopause!

I would recommend a course of 6 weekly treatments, followed by monthly maintenance treatments.

Facial Reflexology

Helping improve health & wellbeing while leaving you with radiant skin and a healthy glow

Facial reflexology, like foot reflexology aims to help your entire body function at its optimal level, with the unique addition of giving you a more radiant, firmer, glowing complexion which can have a really profound emotional benefit.

Facial reflexology focuses on reflex points on the face which help stimulate the body’s healing mechanisms, it improves circulation and nerve conduction, encouraging the release of toxins from the body via the lymphatic system.  The close proximity to the brain and cranial nerves make it a very powerful and impactful treatment, particularly for headaches, migraines, sinus conditions, bruxism & bells palsy.

Stress at any level disturbs our physical, emotional and mental well-being which upsets the body’s natural balance. Facial reflexology helps open up the neural pathways assisting the control of stress levels. It also has an analgesic effect by releasing natural endorphins which can reduce pain in the body.

The Bergman method of facial reflexology was developed by award winning reflexologist Ziggie Bergman and is based on zone therapy. Zone therapy was created by Dr Fitzgerald while studying Native Americans who used pressure point therapy to relieve pain. He charted ten energy zones which start at the crown of the head extending down to the toes and fingertips, this now forms the basis is of modern reflexology as we know it. Some of the techniques used in the Bergman method were inspired by these Native American techniques.

Facial reflexology aims to:

* Relieve the effects of stress in the body

* Improve circulation to the face and head, thereby speeding up the exchange of oxygen, nutrients, carbon dioxide and waste products

* Improve lymphatic drainage aiding the removal of waste products and toxins

* Relieve tension in the muscle tissue

* Relieve mental strain and improve concentration

* Help relieve sinus congestion

* Has a direct rejuvenating effect of the skin leaving the face glowing and radiant

* Can bring about a general feeling of calmness and relaxation

What to expect

Before your first treatment we will have a brief consultation covering current health and well-being which will allow me to plan the treatments specifically for you. You will lie back in my comfy reclining chair, wrapped in warm blankets, allowing your body to be fully supported.

I will then begin by gently wiping the skin, removing any debris and preparing for the facial oil. I use a vegan friendly and cruelty free amethyst crystal infused elixir, that harnesses the magic and medicinal properties of Native American sacred plants to renew the skin and lift the spirits. Amethyst is a stone known for its qualities to work on the emotional, spiritual and physical planes to promote calm, balance and peace.

I then use a combination of effleurage & petrissage massage techniques to increase circulation, relax the muscles and warm the skins tissues which allows me to apply gentle pressure across all the reflex points and vital energy points to stimulate the nerves and restore energy and balance.

Please note this treatment is not suitable until at least 3 weeks after any botox or filler procedure.

The Zone Face Lift

A beautiful, holistic facial treatment that combines traditional reflexology methods and ancient healing techniques from Native American shamans. Using pressure point massage, sacred healing herbs, Asian body mapping and crystals to create the Zone Face Lift, which lifts the face and spirits and will leave you feeling blissed-out with a smoother face to match.

Naturally lifts your face and spirit

The Zone Face Lift

Pioneering a new way to naturally age well, this amazing facial treatment created by award winning reflexologist Ziggie Bergman is being hailed by many as a credible

alternative to Botox, whilst offering a transformative journey on the inside.  The skin is the largest organ in the body and the only one we can touch directly, so creating a treatment to bring the skin back to its radiant condition works on the inside and out.

Using only organic anti-aging ingredients, guided healing visualisations, smudging

and traditional reflexology this is a facial treatment like no other.

Facial reflexology focuses on reflex points on the face which help stimulate the

body’s healing mechanisms, it improves circulation and nerve conduction, encouraging the release of toxins from the body via the lymphatic system.  The close proximity to the brain and cranial nerves make it a very powerful and impactful treatment, particularly for headaches, migraines, sinus conditions, bruxism & bells palsy.

Stress at any level disturbs our physical, emotional and mental well-being which upsets the body’s natural balance. Facial reflexology helps open up the neural pathways assisting

the control of stress levels. It also has an analgesic effect by releasing natural endorphins which can reduce pain in the body.

What To Expect

Before your first treatment we will have a brief consultation covering current health, well-being and skin type which will allow me to plan the treatments specifically for you. You will lie back in my comfy reclining chair, wrapped in warm blankets, allowing your body to be fully supported.

Hot towels are used to open the pores and stimulate blood and lymph circulation. It softens the skin and encourages the sebaceous glands to clear. Using hot towels also exfoliates the skin to expose younger skin and removes make-up, oils and pollutants, preparing your

skin for the facial oil.

I then begin gently working the reflexes on the face, instantly calming the body and stimulating the body’s own healing mechanisms, encouraging blood and lymph flow to remove toxins and waste from the body.

Using a Gua Sha as a sculpting and lifting tool I work from the chin upwards, this can increase

micro circulation by up to 400%. It stimulates lymphatic drainage, reduces puffiness, and triggers natural collagen and elastin production.

The tool I use is Black Obsidian, known as the stone of clarity. Absorbing negative energy, it can help heal old wounds and remove self limitations. Black obsidian is a volcanic glass known for its protective and predictive properties formed by powerful volcanic eruptions

that solidify fast. The stone's powerful energies contain elements of Earth, Fire, and Water. It is a deep detoxification stone that releases tension and works well to clear away suppressed toxicity in the system and deeply suppressed emotions. Unlike the other stones, black obsidian naturally retains warmth and is great to use on congested, blemish prone skin. The warmth of the obsidian also encourages stimulation of the lymphatic system and circulation.

Then a combination of the very best and most effective ancient and modern facial

massage techniques and the use of crystals and acupressure rollers are used to free constrictions both within the facial muscles and in the connective tissue. Smoothing fine lines and releasing any tension and emotions held in the face.

Benefits

  • Tightens, plumps & sculps the face, jaw and neck line

Auricular Reflexology & Ear Seeding

In the west, Auriculotherapy stemmed from the medical world and licensed practitioners used to diagnose illness which was then treated manually on the ear with various implements. In ancient China diagnosis of disease in the body was centred on the auricle and treatment included massage, scratching, bleeding and blowing in the ear!

In more recent times Dr Paul Nogier a neurosurgeon, medical research scientist, psychotherapist, acupuncturist and homeopath spent

30 years researching the auricle. In 1958 his ear reflex map went on to create the Chinese ear acupuncture chart that was approved by the world health organisation.

Reflexology on the ear stimulates the same reflexes that are mapped out on the feet, hands and face but also includes some master and functional points used in traditional Chinese medicine, and like foot reflexology gentle pressure is applied on both the dorsal and anterior surfaces of both ears.

Why we work the ears;

Auricular reflexology is safe, simple, quick and because of the close proximity to the brain it is very effective. It can;

  • Improve the circulation and lymphatic system
  • Stimulate the brain and nervous system
  • Balance the body
  • Help with pain relief and control
  • Is relaxing and re-energising
  • Is fast acting and long lasting.

Auricular reflexology can be used alone or combined with face or foot reflexology and self-care once shown is easy and effective for you to work at home between treatments.

Ear seeding

Every auricular treatment will include the use of ear seeds (if you want them)

Ear seeds come in many different forms including magnets, minerals and crystals and are used to reinforce a treatment, providing an excellent tool between treatments. Placed and held onto the ear with flesh coloured hypoallergenic surgical tape you can apply pressure by pressing the seeds 3-4 times a day for around 30 seconds.

I use either tourmaline seeds or gold magnets depending on what we are treating for and these can be kept on for up to a week.

Supine Indian Head Massage

Dating back to 600BC Indian Head Massage (IHM) was brought over from India to Britain in 1973 by an osteopath and massage therapist Narendra Mehta who carefully studied the physiological benefits of the treatment and adapted it to suit western tastes. Today Indian head massage is a widely used treatment not only due to its ability to be deeply relaxing but its many physiological and emotional benefits include;

  • Improved muscle tension in face, neck, shoulder, back and upper arms
  • Helps mobility in neck and shoulders
  • Can improve joint mobility
  • Encourages a feeling of wellbeing
  • Can relieve physical and emotional stress
  • Promotes deep relaxation
  • Improves circulation to the head and neck assisting in the removal of toxins
  • Improves Lymphatic Drainage encouraging the removal of waste products
  • Relieves mental and physical stain and improves concentration
  • Helps headaches, insomnia, bruxism, eyestrain
  • Relieves sinus congestion
  • Improves mood and alertness
  • May help improve hair loss, thinning and alopecia

Most people only worry about their hair's health when it starts to look dry or thin. When the body is subjected to ill health or stress, the hair is often affected and can become dry. Menopause can also dry and thin the hair due to changing hormones.

What to expect:

The massage focuses on the head, face, ears, neck, shoulders, arms and hands, but can of course be adapted to suit you. I offer ‘Supine’ Indian head massage – supine meaning lying face upwards. A treatment that is traditionally performed ‘dry’ meaning no oil is used in the hair, it is also carried out over clothing.

Various techniques are used, each with its own unique purpose be it to increase blood circulation to an area, stimulate muscles fibres, or to relieve tension in the muscles.

Expect to experience deep relaxation !

Treatments can be stand alone or combined with any of my other treatments.

Stand alone Supine Indian Head Massage – 35 minutes £35

Support & Information

There are some wonderful charities and organisations that provide a wealth of information and support. Some useful links below;

This Months Focus on..........

Selfcare for Headaches & Migraines

Some headaches and migraines can be debilitating and have an effect on our quality of life. Try the self care on this page when you experience one and see how it feels. you can use any kind of oil for easier movement across the reflex points. Its also worth thinking about what may trigger your attacks.

Typical triggers

Stress – think about typical stress levels, what triggers stress and where levels are when an attack starts

Weather changes

Travel – Recent air travel, car journeys etc what are

you doing during this time.

Menstruation / menopause – where are you in your cycle when an attack starts.  Are you peri-menopausal or menopausal

Sleep disturbance – how much sleep are you getting?  Is this quality sleep?.  Do you wake feeling refreshed?

Processed meals – do you eat these? How often.

Bright light – think about the lighting in your working environment or the environment you spend most of your day in. Consider blue light glasses

Odours – what smells you are exposed to for long periods of time during the day (or night)

Food – some foods can trigger migraines, such as nuts, wine & cheese. what have you eaten just before an attack?  Are you eating regular meals and snacks, or

you going long periods without eating?

Posture – what is your posture like during the day (computer work, physical work, sitting in a classroom.

Dehydration – how much WATER are you drinking everyday. 2 litres is really a minimum, and don't forget tea & coffee are diuretics which increase the excretion of water from the body, potentially dehydrating you further.

Digestion – are you constipated or have a sluggish digestive system

Relaxation – are you taking time EVERY DAY to relax

Id like you to think about your triggers, perhaps a migraine

diary to include what you were doing just before the migraine started.  What made it better or worse.  How long it lasted. These questions may help you drill down to the cause and what you can do to prevent attacks.
